Pick the right scrubs for tucking

Scrubs come in many styles and can be worn in different ways (e.g., cuffed, un-cuffed, pants only, top only). The style of scrub should suit your taste and work environment. Make sure to consider if you need to wear your shirt tucked into your pants and if you will need to tuck your scrub top into bottoms.

Scrubs with a race-back design can be tucked into scrubs pants, but it may not look as neat as tops with back closure panels or full button backs. For best results, try wearing the bottom of the fabric straight down from the waistband of your pants.

Choose long enough shirts:

Choose a scrub shirt that is longer than your natural waistline. When choosing low-rise scrubs make sure to check for length! Layer a scrub top over any undershirts or camisoles that might show when tucked in. Avoid short tops that expose midriff when tucked into pants or skirts.

Taper pants at belly:

Buy pants with a tapered leg to maintain a smooth line from your scrubs top to bottom. Place your hand at the natural waistline and pull the scrubs fabric down slightly before tucking into pants, otherwise, you create a baggy look around your middle. If this is too tight, consider going up a size.

Don’t poke out!

When wearing fitted tops tucked in make sure they don’t stretch or pull out of your pants! Try placing a belt over your shirt band to help it stay put throughout the day. It’s also important not to wear too much bulk around the midsection by layering clothes over underlayers, which will poke out when tucked in.

Wear low-rise pants if you want to tuck in your top

Low-rise scrubs pants sit below the belly button and usually have a wider waistband. When shopping for low-rise scrubs try holding the pants up to your body or ask if you can return them if they don’t fit as expected, rather than buying and hoping for the best. Pockets on scrubs pants should be wide enough so that when sitting down nothing pokes out. The trouser leg of low rise pants stops at or just above ankle length so no skin shows between pant fabric and shoe.

Stack the layers correctly

Layer tops underneath your top such as undershirts, camisoles, and button-downs. Layer bottoms underneath your scrub bottoms such as leggings, socks, and knee-length shorts. A common mistake is wearing too many layers of clothes underneath scrubs which leads to the dreaded “muffin top” syndrome.

Keep it simple

Wearing a top with a print or design will draw attention to the mid-section and make your muffin top more noticeable than if you were to wear a solid color scrub top or pants on your own. Try wearing solids on the bottom half for this reason. Pair tops with bottoms of different colors such as black pants with a white scrub top instead of black and white together for best results!

Choose the right shoes

Your shoe choice depends on where you work and how long your shift is, but we recommend wearing low-heeled shoes for comfort and to keep scrubs pants fabric from bunching up while sitting down throughout the day. Wedges are a great alternative as they offer more support than typical flats and don’t sink into the grass as easily as heels do! Flats with rubber soles offer grip and durability which is really helpful when working on wet hospital floors all day! Sockless shoes allow for plenty of room to fold over pants fabric toward the inside of your shoes.

Don’t go monochromatic

Combining all one color can make you look bigger in size. Try pairing a brighter color with a neutral color or patterned top for best results when wearing tucked-in scrubs! For example, if you are wearing black pants with a black scrub top, try adding some reds and oranges into the mix by wearing an orange camisole underneath. Another example would be navy blue pants with a white print top or solids!

Wear fitted clothing for slimming effect

Wearing form-fitting fabrics helps to streamline your silhouette which emphasizes your leaner parts while downplaying larger areas. Stay away from clothes that are too skinny such as jeggings and invest in fitted clothing like straight leg or boot cut jeans.

When it comes to patterned scrubs pants, pairing a patterned top with a solid bottom helps streamline the body by creating a vertical line from the shoulders down which makes you look longer and leaner. Some great examples of this would be wearing a print scrub top with solid navy blue bottoms, red scrub pants with a solid beige top or brown scrub pants with a black print scrub top. Remember when choosing tops to layer under your main shirt that patterns should always match patterns and solids should always go with solids.

Accessorize:

Adding key pieces of jewelry and accessories can help distract from a mid-section that might not be the skinniest. If your scrubs lack pockets try wearing a belt to break up all that solid fabric and add some bling! A scarf is also another great accessory for hiding a muffin top, but make sure you get one long enough to cover any exposed skin such as when bending over or reaching high on shelves!

While it’s true, scrubs aren’t known for their stylishness, there are ways you can look more professional and polished without giving up comfort altogether. It all comes down to finding what works best for your body shape and looking in the mirror every day to see how these tips affect your appearance.

It’s important to remember that scrubs are meant to make you comfortable. If something is uncomfortable, don’t wear it. Try things on in the store or ask a friend if they think an outfit makes you look bigger than others do. No one knows what works best for your body better than yourself!
